Connections. That seems to be what the new millennium is all about. Faster phone connections, internet, e-mail. You have to be connected to survive. But sometimes we're so busy trying to stay connected that we find we're actually disconnected from the things that are really important. Youth activities at First Baptist Church are all about making those important connections. We connect with each other, with people in the community and with God. To keep those kinds of connections it's important to do things that are fun as well as things that are spiritual, and things that allow us to serve others. So how does one youth program do this? Take the "FBC Famine Project" for example. Last year members of our youth group went for over 24 hours without eating to raise money for the resettlement of refugees from Burma. During that time we spent together we went roller skating and watched movies (that's the fun part), made banners for an upcoming worship service (the service part), conducted a scavenger hunt food drive (fun and service combined) and had a midnight candlelight prayer service (you got it, the spiritual part). On top of that we documented the whole thing on videotape! We interview each other and made video diary entries talking about how the whole famine was affecting us. It really made us realize how much we take being able to eat for granted..Other things are just for fun, like our trips to go tubing down the river or spending the evening at Valley Fair. But even when we're just having fun, we're connecting together as Christian friends. In Sunday School we spend time talking to each other about the things that are going on in our lives, and try to figure out what the Bible says about these things and how it applies to us today. Whether we're having an overnight at the church, conducting the worship service for "Youth Take Over Sunday," volunteering with the homeless at Project Home or playing at a water park in the Wisconsin Dells, we're making connections to what's really important. |
